Three Tips to Avoid Dry Winter Skin

Three Tips to Avoid Dry Winter Skin

Some of my favorite winter memories involve snowmobiling, sledding, skiing, and building snowmen with my loved ones then returning home to a toasty fire to reminisce about the day’s events. However, I found that my chapped and dry skin didn’t have as much of a good time!

Turns out that both the cold air outside and the warm air inside dry out your skin. Cold air holds fewer water molecules than warm or hot air, so when you are outside in cold weather, the extra dry air pulls moisture from your skin. When you head back inside, the warm air from indoor heating evaporates additional moisture.

During the holidays I tried four wonderful suggestions given to me by a dermatologist and several Young Living leaders. Let me share them with you.

1.    Use Moisturizing Gels with Skin-Loving Essential Oils
Stock your showers with moisturizing shower gels that clean effectively without stripping your skin of its natural moisture barrier. Try adding the following oils to Young Living bath and shower gels for a moisturizing experience for every member of the family!
Morning Start Bath & Shower Gel - Young Living

Men’s Shower Gel
Using Morning Start® Bath & Shower Gel, mix in 6 drops each of the following essential oils, adjusting as desired:
  • Idaho Blue Spruce
  • Hong Kuai
  • Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood
  • Shutran

Lavender Bath and Shower Gel - Young LivingWomen’s Shower Gel
Using Lavender Bath & Shower Gel, mix in 6 drops each of the following essential oils, adjusting as desired:
  • Geranium
  • Myrrh
  • Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood
  • Ylang Ylang

2.    Use Ultra-Hydrating Moisturizers with Skin-Loving Essential Oils
I want my family to use my favorite lotions and to use them often. I take my favorite Young Living lotions, with added essential oils for my own personal twist, and stash them in every room, purse, backpack, and car in our household.

Lavender Hand and Body Lotion - Young LivingMen’s Hand and Body Lotion
Add the same custom essential oil blend as in the shower gel—Blue Spruce, Hong Kuai, Sandalwood, and Shutran—to Young Living’sLavender Hand & Body Lotion, adjusting as needed to fit your preference.

Women’s Hand and Body Lotion
Start with Lavender Hand & Body Lotion and add 6 drops each of the same essential oils used in the shower gel: Geranium, Myrrh, Sandalwood, and Ylang Ylang, adjusting as needed.

3.    Use a Humidifier: Set It and Forget It
If you’re looking for a simple, passive way to help your skin, try using a humidifier in your home. You can turn it on and forget about it as you go about your business, and the humidifier does the rest! I also love diffusing essential oils near my humidifier. The essential oil mist teams up with the humid air to create a pleasant atmosphere. I avoid adding essential oils directly to my humidifier because my model has plastic parts that are difficult to clean.

Winter Hands - Young LivingThese aren’t the only ways you can fight the ravaging effects of winter air on your skin. Young Living’s products have a unique versatility that might surprise you. Recently, while sledding with family, I noticed that my little grandson’s nose and cheeks were starting to chap. I only had Lavender Lip Balm with me at the time, so I applied it directly to his face. It worked wonderfully!

If you’ve had similar experiences with Young Living products or want to share your own tips for keeping your skin moisturized in winter weather, leave us a comment!

4 Quick Tips for Mental Sharpness

4 Quick Tips for Mental Sharpness

For many, this time of year can be hectic and exhausting. Between juggling busy school schedules, meeting deadlines, and everything else on your plate, having a sharp mind to stay on top of it all is crucial. I’m excited to share five practices I have recently discovered that support my mental focus and increase my energy levels:

1. Before going to sleep, I slice ¼ of a cucumber and add the slices to 12 ounces of water, then leave it in the refrigerator overnight. In the morning, I add a few drops of Citrus Fresh essential oil blend to the cucumber-infused water and drink it within 10 minutes of waking.

2. Every day I try to take 15 minutes to calm my mind and focus my thoughts. Meditation can be as simple as sitting quietly or concentrating on your breathing.  Meditation has been practiced for centuries and is known for unique benefits such as increased awareness, decreased stress levels, and heightened mental clarity. I often diffuse Clarity essential oil blend to enhance my reflection time.

3. Sometime around my midday meal, I like to take advantage of a few cognition-supporting supplements. NingXia Nitro is the perfect afternoon pick-me-up, full of beneficial ingredients like D-Ribose and Korean ginseng extract. I also like to use MindWise, Young Living’s new advanced brain wellness serum. Providing vitamin D, CoQ10, ALCAR, and GPC, MindWise is my go-to supplement for supporting my mind and memory.*

4. In addition to stimulating multiple areas of the brain, music helps minimize background noise and distractions. I have found classical music to be my ultimate distraction reducer. Whether I am at work, completing household chores, or simply relaxing, listening to my favorite composers keeps my mind motivated and engaged.

Protein Power: 12 Quick and Easy Protein-Filled Snacks

Protein Power: 12 Quick and Easy Protein-Filled Snacks

From your head to your toes and everything in between, protein is a necessary component of every cell in the body. Your body uses protein to build and repair tissue, and it is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. You also use protein to make enzymes, hormones, and other essential chemicals in the body. Your hair and nails are almost exclusively made of protein. Clearly, protein is indispensable—both in your body and in your diet.
Along with fat and carbohydrates, protein is a macronutrient, meaning that the body needs relatively large amounts of it. Vitamins and minerals, which are only needed in small quantities, are called micronutrients. But unlike fat and carbohydrates, the body does not store protein and, therefore, has no reservoir to draw on when it needs a new supply.
One study suggests that consuming protein at regular intervals during the day may help support whole-body metabolism. Eating snacks rich in protein throughout the day could aid how your body uses this essential nutrient.1

How much do I need?
Child in Young Living Lavender Farm
Exactly how much protein you need changes with age. According to WebMD, here are a few guidelines for daily protein intake, according to age:
  • Babies: about 10 grams
  • School-age kids: 19-34 grams
  • Teenage boys: up to 52 grams
  • Teenage girls: 46 grams
  • Adult men: about 56 grams
  • Adult women: about 46 grams
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women: about 71 grams

How can I get more protein in my diet?
Here are 10 quick and easy snacks that offer protein! Try adding some of these to your daily routine to give your diet a delicious boost of protein.
  1. Greek yogurt topped with toasted almonds: 17 grams of protein per 170-gram container of nonfat Greek yogurt
  2. Hummus and red pepper slices: 6 grams of protein per 1/4 cup hummus and half a red pepper
  3. Cottage cheese topped with dried wolfberries: 27 grams of protein per 1 cup of cottage cheese and 2 tablespoons of wolfberries.
  4. New Pure Protein Complete in Vanilla Spice or Chocolate Deluxe: 25 grams of protein per serving
  5. Deli rollup: a slice of tomato, lettuce, and thin slices of red bell pepper with a squirt of mustard, all wrapped in a slice of turkey: Pure Protein Complete - Young Living12 grams of protein per 2 rollups

Getting to Know Your Carrier Oils

Getting to Know Your Carrier Oils

Carrier oils are usually overlooked because they don’t contain the therapeutic constituents of other essential oils, but they can play an indispensable companion of topically applied oils. Let’s take a closer look at these carriers and why they deserve a place on the shelf of anyone who uses and loves essential oils.

What are carrier oils?
Carrier oils are naturally derived from vegetarian sources and have a neutral smell. They aren’t volatile like essential oils, which makes them an excellent medium for dilution and application.
 What aren’t carrier oils?
Vegetable shortening, butter, and margarine are best left in the kitchen—they’re not intended for topical use. Mineral oil and other petroleum derivatives like petroleum jelly should also not be used as carrier oils.
 How are carrier oils used?
Essential oils are volatile, which means they evaporate rapidly and contain the natural smell and characteristics of the plant. This can make them too strong to apply undiluted. Carrier oils do not evaporate or have a strong aroma, making them the perfect pair for diluting especially strong essential oils—reducing the concentration of the essential oil without altering its therapeutic qualities. When you dilute an essential oil with a carrier oil, you can also control its concentration before applying.
Like other substances that are high in fat, carrier oils have a limited shelf life, meaning that eventually they can go bad. Depending on the type, oils with a short shelf life should typically be used within six months, while oils with a longer shelf life may stay good for up to a year. It’s important to store oils in their original air-tight containers in a cool, dark place, such as the pantry, to maximize shelf life.
Carrier oils can vary widely in their consistency, absorption, aroma, shelf life, and other characteristics. Carrier oils can be blended to change or combine their properties, so you can mix and match until you find the blend that’s just right for you!
Get to know some of the more popular carrier oils!

Home Diffuser, Cloves and Thieves

Clove
Clove essential oil is distilled from the same rich, spicy cloves that have been used in cooking and baking for thousands of years. Clove essential oil promotes a healthy immune response and may support overall wellness, making it an important part of our Thieves, ImmuPower, Inner Defense, and Longevity formulas.*

  • Combine Clove with Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, and Nutmeg essential oils in homemade cider or wassail recipes.
  • Substitute sparing amounts of Clove essential oil for the ground spice in cooking recipes.
  • Add a drop of Clove to a warm bowl of oatmeal for a tasty addition to your breakfast

Thieves
Thieves essential oil blend delivers the naturally occurring constituents limonene, eugenol, and eucalyptol and may contribute to overall wellness when taken as a dietary supplement.* Try adding one or more of these uses to your wellness regimen:

  • Add 2–4 drops of Thieves to a vegetarian gel capsule and swallow with water.
  • Add 1 drop Thieves and 2 drops Orange essential oil to your favorite beverage as a refreshing flavor addition.
  • Add 1 drop to a cup of warm water, herbal tea, or other hot drink to add a spicy zing.
