Where to apply essential oils on your body

Anytime you apply, rub, or massage essential oils into your skin, your experience starts with sensory receptors. These receptor cells are all over your body, and they do some pretty powerful stuff. Let’s talk about what these human body receptors are and why they’re so amazing!

What is a receptor, and how does it work?

Receptors are protein molecules that have binding sites on them for different types of molecules. When an external molecule finds a binding site it fits in, it communicates with your brain through electrical signals. These signals can go to your muscles, organs, or—in the case of your olfactory receptors—the amygdala, which is involved in the emotions you experience.

Which essential oils are safe to ingest?

It’s a common question and one you’ve probably had yourself: Which essential oils are safe to ingest? It can be hard to know if ingesting essential oils is safe; from Pinterest to YouTube, you’ll find thousands of different answers. We know how important essential oil safety is and that nothing is more critical than choosing the right products for you and your family, so we’ve got all the information you need to know about the internal use of essential oils.

Essential oils explained

Let’s start at the beginning. Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts, with a single drop containing the equivalent constituents of several plants. So while the important benefits we find in nature are valuable and important, it’s also critical to remember that too much of a good thing is a bad thing. For instance, while we all need water every day to live and thrive, too much could lead to water toxicity. Similarly, using too much of an essential oil can result in negative effects. That’s why the directions on the label are so important; they maximize safety and the benefit of the oil, while minimizing any potential reactions.

This begs the question, however: Which essential oils are safe to ingest? You always want to make sure that the essential oils you choose to use internally are the purest available and that they come from plants that are safe for human consumption. Fortunately, Young Living has a line of essential oils specifically labeled for internal use with directions on how to do so safely. There’s no difference in purity and authenticity when it comes to our Vitality™ oils and our topical/aromatic oils, but our Vitality line is clearly labeled for internal use. 1. Bandages of all sizes. They’re a quick and easy fix for accidents big and small. Keep a few stashed away for scraped knees and other owies. We suggest having a small first aid kit handy, including Lavender essential oil to cleanse and soothe minor skin irritations.

Essential Oils and Pets: A Quick How-To

You love to share essential oils with your family, so it makes sense that you want to share them with your pets as well! Before you begin using essential oils for pets, you need to know the answers to some important questions: Can you use essential oils on dogs, cats, and other pets the same way you use them on yourself? How much should you use? What is the best way to administer oils for topical and internal use?

It is important to note that animals cannot tell us if something is working or not, so it is our duty to exercise due caution and approach using oils on animals safely and responsibly.

Please note that these are general recommendations for use. If your veterinarian suggests other usage, defer to your veterinarian. If your pet is pregnant, nursing, or has a medical condition, consult a veterinarian prior to use.

Basic Guidelines

There are some general tips and suggestions you’ll want to keep in mind as you share essential oils with your furry friends.

• Do not use essential oils on and around cats or dogs under 8 weeks old because they are developing at fast rates; it is easy to mess up the proper dilution for each breed.
• Animals are generally more sensitive to essential oils than humans are. It’s best to heavily dilute essential oils and use them in moderation.
• Every animal is different, so carefully observe how your animal responds to essential oils. Use common sense and good judgment as you try different methods.
• Be especially careful to not get essential oils in an animal’s eyes.
• If diffusing, always allow cats access to areas where they can avoid the diffused oil.
• With all animals, avoid using high-phenol oils—such as Oregano, Wintergreen, Clove, Mountain Savory, and Thyme. This is especially important with cats.
• Use special caution with cats and essential oils. Avoid applying citrus oils topically, diffusing the scent around cats, and having your cat ingest them.
